Weekend Recap

What a weekend!
Friday night, Ryan and I went to Ray’s the Steaks for his birthday. Soon after we sat down at our table, the manager brought over two glasses of complimentary champagne in honor of Ryan’s birthday (I let them know when I made the reservation). For our drinks, Ryan ordered beer and I ordered a glass of red wine, which I hardly drank. Side note: When we were in Rome, I drank way too much red wine on New Year’s Eve (and beer…and champagne) and got sick. I still don’t think I’m ready for red wine yet. Anyway, for an appetizer, we had bacon wrapped scallops. For our entrees, I had filet with a brandy mushroom cream sauce. Ryan has a filet with blue cheese sauce. Both were absolutely delicious. We loved our steaks so much, we hardly even touched the complimentary sides of mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. For dessert, we split the espresso mousse. The taste and texture were perfect. All in all, our dinner was excellent!
On Saturday morning, I got up bright and early to meet Brenna for an 8am hot yoga class at Supernova Yoga. We were both extremely pleased that our favorite instructor, Jamie, was teaching, since he makes the class fly by. He has a very different style than most Bikram instructors; he coaches you through the class, but he offers little jokes and tells stories that make the class a lot less serious. Being able to laugh when it’s 105 degrees and you’re working your butt off is key!
Once hot yoga was over, I picked Ryan up and we headed to Bally’s to lift weights. Lifting with Ryan was great because he challenged me in how much weight I could lift. It turns out I have some pretty strong legs! For squats, I put 90 lbs on a 42 lb bar. Looks like all the Group Power at Vida and PowerFlext at Bally’s have paid off. We made plans to do it all again on Tuesday. J
After Bally's, Ryan and I went to Great Harvest Bread Company. I have read a ton about Great Harvest on the blogs I follow and have always wanted to try it. It turns out, we have one just a few minutes away from us and we had a gift card! We got two loaves. One was called Apple Scrapple and the other Honey Whole Wheat. The Honey Whole Wheat tastes pretty standard, but the Apple Scrapple is simply delicious. It is soft, chewy and has a crunchy top like on apple crisp. I can totally see why the ladies on the blogs I read love Great Harvest!
After a trip to Costco and salads at home, Ryan and I geared up for a night out with friends to celebrate his birthday. I’m going to save the re-telling of our night for another post since I have lots to say.
On a final note, I signed up for the Four Courts Four Miler on March 12th. It will be a really fun way to get my Saturday morning run in with Brenna and Amy.
Happy Monday! I hope you’re all feeling more rested than I am.

A few things I wish I owned...

Garmin’s Forerunner® 305 to help me train for my upcoming 10-miler.

Marc by Marc Jacobs' Classic Q Little Ukita because its just as functional, but much prettier than my current bag.
J.Crew's Lockwood Satchel for the same reasons as the bag above (although this one is more practical color-wise).

Puppy French Bulldog because he's so cute and Gilly would love a brother from another mother.

Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer just because.

A Banana Saver so that I didn't always have to carry my bananas in my jacket pockets (I probably should just buy this one...)

A Snowy Week

What a week!
Things did not exactly goes as planned this week- some things for the better, some for the worse.
Instead of going to PowerFlex on Tuesday, I went to Zumba with Brenna and Jennifer. They both had a work event on Thursday evening, so we decided to go earlier in the week rather than skipping. Zumba was really fun, although my concentration was off. There were just too many people to watch. One lady in front of me was shaking her butt so hard that her pants kept riding down to expose half of her butt crack! There were also three little kids in front of us, probably around seven, that were adorable. I love that people of all ages come to Zumba!
Although Amy and I were supposed to go to hot yoga on Wednesday, class was canceled because of a snowstorm. GW, however, did not cancel my 3pm class (GRRR…). By the time I got out of class “early” at  5:30, the snow was coming down hard. Ryan picked me up at the Pentagon City metro and it took us over THREE HOURS to get home. The commute from the metro to our apartment is typically a four to five minute drive. In the future, I will use more common sense and go to school when there is a severe weather alert in effect. GW should also could use a big heaping dose of common sense.
After work yesterday, Ryan and I went to the gym for a quick workout. While he lifted, I hopped on the treadmill. I started with a five minute warm up, then ran three miles at 7.00mph at a .5 incline, and cooled down for 5 minutes. I’m really trying to push myself in terms of speed. I was pretty comfortable at 7mph and am going to try to keep increasing my mileage at that speed.
In other news, I recently tried Earth Balance (vegan, gluten free “butter”). Have you heard of it? I learned about it from one of the blogs I read and was intrigued. I picked some up the other night at Whole Foods and tried it this week. One word: YUM! It has the same light taste as butter, without that weird margarine taste. I’ve been liberally spreading it on my whole wheat English muffins and toast this week. I plan to bake with the the Earth Balance natural shortening next weekend and will let you know how it goes!
It’s snowing again! Let’s hope it doesn’t interfere with our dinner plans tonight. We’re going to Ray’s the Steaks for Ryan’s birthday. Cross your fingers we make it!

10-Miler Training Schedule

Yesterday morning I kicked off my day with a run on the treadmill. I warmed up by walking for 10 minutes, pushed the speed to 6.5 and ran for four miles. I cooled down with about 10 more minutes of walking.

I was really surprised by how good I felt. After not running for a month I was nervous that I would struggle. My only complaint was that there was a lot of stiffness in my right knee during my cool down. I'm hoping this is just normal aches and pains from lack of use and running on the treadmill.

After having such a good experience yesterday, I felt 100% sure that I want to run the GW Parkway Classic 10-miler in April. I also made it my goal to run the entire 10 miles without stopping. Now that it's in writing for the world to see, I guess I'm sticking to it!

Below is my spring training schedule. Amy is going to run the race as well and we plan to do the Saturday runs together. For the shorter Saturday runs, I still plan to attend PowerFlex to make sure I get my weight training in. Once the runs get a bit longer (and more time consuming), I will forgo PowerFlex and do my weight training during the week.

Now all that's left to do is: 1) fork over the $65 race fee, and 2) get fitted for some new running shoes!

Back in Action!

Alright folks, I’m back. Blogging, exercise, healthy eating, and normal routines have all been absent from my life for quite some time now. Here’s what’s been going on:
  1. Ryan and I went to Rome the day after Christmas for our honeymoon. We spent six days walking around the city, eating delicious pasta, drinking delicious wine and devouring gelato. The highlights of the trip were the Sistine Chapel, an evening walking tour of the ancient city, and New Year’s Eve. We had a wonderful time, but were ready to come home by the end of the week. We missed our creature comforts (our soft bed, a normal size shower that drains, television, the English language…).
  2. The day after Ryan and I got back from Rome, I started my new job. So far, so good! I really like my new coworkers. They’re all really easy to talk to, smart, and passionate about public health. They’re fun too! The past three weeks have flown by and the transition has been as smooth as it possible.
  3. I've been neglecting my normal low-carb diet and have adopted a high-carb, high-fat, high cupcake, cake, muffins, nachos, cinnamon roll, cookies diet. Have you heard of it? Christmas and the trip to Rome made it really hard to stick to my normal diet. I’m determined to get back on the wagon ever so slowly. However, I do not plan to go back to the diet I was on before Christmas. Pre-Christmas I did not eat bread or grains during the week. I now plan on integrating bread or grains into one meal per day. The other meals I plan to stick with lots of fruits, veggies, low-fat yogurt and cheese, beans, etc.
  4. Does it surprise you to learn that I also haven’t been exercising regularly either? ;) Although we walked all day in Rome and I have intermittently exercised since we have gotten back, I still haven’t gotten back to a normal, regular exercise schedule. My body can tell the difference… it’s simply softer.  I went to a weight lifting class yesterday and could only lift a fraction of what I could in the beginning of December. I’m also super sore today. The soreness is fueling my motivation to get back at it and into shape!
  5. I’ve slowly ventured back into taking hot yoga classes. Brenna and I had an awesome practice last Sunday with a great teacher who made the class challenging, but also light and fun. We went to another class last Friday and wanted to die throughout the entire 90 minutes. Instead of 105 degrees, it felt like 1,005. I sat out during quite a few poses because I felt light-headed and dizzy. Yet, despite the fact that the class was challenging, I still felt wonderful afterward and am already looking forward to going back this week. (By the way, Brenna and I promptly followed-up our Friday night practice with frozen yogurt at Red Mango and cupcakes at Crumbs. We’re that ridiculous.)
  6. School started and it’s already weighing hard on my shoulders. All I can say is that I can’t wait until it’s done. How many days until April 27?
  7.  I had brunch today at Carlyle in Shirlington with some of my girlfriends. It was really fun and really delicious. I had a Thai-style salad with fried shrimp. It was divine and I can’t stop talking about it. I also shared a pecan role . One word: Scrumptious. For being such a good husband, I brought Ryan home a chocolate cupcake with cream cheese frosting from Best Buns. I convinced him to give me a bite and let’s just say it was worth the calories.
  8. On tap for this week:
    • Monday- Intervals on the treadmill for 60 minutes. No work (comp day). Lunch with my old boss. School 6-9pm L
    • Tuesday- Work. Powerflex.
    • Wednesday- Work. School 3-6pm. Hot Yoga with Amy 8pm.
    • Thursday- Work. Zumba with Brenna and Jennifer
    • Friday- Work. Dinner at Ray’s the Steaks with my hubby for his birthday! J
    • Saturday- Treadmill and Powerflex. Lunch at Great Harvest. Clarendon Ballroom for Ryan’s birthday.
    • Sunday- Relax

That’s all for tonight! I promise to deliver more regular updates in the future!
